Sara Nycole Couture

A Statement from the Designer

I am an eccentric  fashion forward young designer with an appreciation for the classics. I design because it allows me to be creative and business minded in the same token. I come from an outer laying part of the countryside in New Brunswick, surrounded by woods to play in and a river to explore. It is no surprise that my designs reflect the world I grew up in, very natural and almost wild. I began my journey into the fashion world by recycling old unused clothes into costumes in my teen years. I joined a life action theater towards the end of high school, and I fell in love with the intricate costumes and historical replicas. I began the arduous task of finding a school that taught fashion, and it landed me at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

Most of my concepts seem to come from everywhere. I see something that elates me and I begin researching. Design, for me, is a process of problems that need solving. The steps cannot be calculated but are more of a natural progression. Something always leads to everything. Life is what inspires me and my interpretations of these experiences are what dictate the chosen materials, techniques and themes. One project is never created in the manner of its predecessors. When I create my designs, I think sculpturally  exploring the boundaries of space that surround the garment. I often choose solid color fabrics for color blocking and bold contrasts. In my art there is often a disconnection between the subject and the viewer, causing feelings of an intriguing uneasiness.

I have recently finished working on a collection entitled "Fashion Worth Plundering." The fashion line is based on 18th century pirates, with a dark bohemian gypsy. I drew my inspiration from my environment, history and fantasy to fuse the free spirited of pirates with a Victorian silhouette.  My color palate is a mixture of earthy warm browns and vibrant greens and deep red wine, with hints of black, purple, and silver. I plan on using natural fabrics, such as soft leather, bamboo cotton, and silk. My garments of choice are the well fitted, tailored coats and elegantly laced corsets.

My debut in the 15th Annual NBCCD fashion show Style to Walk: A Fierce Fashion Affair has been my greatest learning experience. I dream of entering the costume design world, bringing with me my passion for period costumes and couture fashions.
